here's senator bob corker from tennessee. >> madam president, i just listened to the president. and my heart's still pounding. it is very disappointing to hear what the president just had to say in front of a pep rally. something very unbecoming of where we are at this moment. i just heard the president say that the way we're going to deal with this sequester is in a balanced way through revenues and through reduced spending. and i just want to go on record, here on the senate floor, i know there are negotiations taking place, but the sequester was to be dealt with, substituted with other spending reductions, not through revenues. and i just hope that all those who are involved in bringing this together understand that even on the democratic side, that that was the understanding. i know the president has fun heckling congress. i think he lost probably numbers of votes with what he did. didn't lose mine. i'm not that way. i'm going to look at the substance, but it is unfortunate that he doesn't spend as much time working on solving problems as he does with campaigns and pep ralli

: you heard from that firefighter and then ahead of him you heard from a man at the center of this, bob king, the president of the united autoworkers here, saying this doesn't necessarily mean the death of unions. the reason i asked him that is because we have seen the decline of union membership, not only here in michigan, but nationally. it was more than 20% of all workers were unionized in 1983. today, it is under 12%. so the symbolism here in michigan is key. i spent time out here with the protesters today and also inside the capital, behind me. if we can roll some of the video, when the first bill of these two bills passed, they sat on the floor of the protesters, chanting veto, veto, saying this is our house. clearly, though, the legislation not moving in the direction they want. the only option now, brooke, frankly, is for them to work hard over the next two years to get representatives they want elected, to get a new governor elected, could overturn this legislation. as long as it is signed by the governor, this is the new law of the land in michigan. >> i know so much of this h
